What started out as a call for “Christmas casuals” has morphed into an almost 14-week shopathon engulfing the retail sector.
For jobseekers, that means plenty of casual opportunities across the Illawarra. One employment website lists almost 2000 casual vacancies, including a significant number of Christmas roles.
In retail, Christmas is a remarkably elastic concept.
The seasonal hiring call-out across the region began gathering pace in mid-October. For some Australian retail chains, the window runs far longer. Kmart advertised roles with start dates from late September through to mid-February, while JB Hi-Fi’s hiring window stretches from early November to early February.
Along the way, the retail calendar takes in plenty of events beyond Christmas itself, from Halloween and the Melbourne Cup to Singles Day, Click Frenzy, January clearances, Australia Day and the back-to-school rush.
One Australian retail and consumer marketing solutions provider’s pre-Christmas survey suggests shoppers are placing greater emphasis on value this year.
Unwrapping shopping trends
Retail Safari’s 11th annual Australian Christmas Shopping Intentions: Unwrapping Christmas Shopping Trends for 2026 survey found November is now the centre of the season, with 71 per cent of shoppers planning to do most of their gift shopping before December. Black Friday, falling on November 27, now reaches two-thirds of shoppers, while Cyber Monday on November 30 remains a strong online shopping event.
The survey found the average expected Christmas gift spend for 2026 had risen five per cent to $698. That marks the third consecutive annual increase, according to the research, conducted with Swinburne University’s CXI Research Group.
Ready to be a Christmas Angel?
Sleepwear specialist Peter Alexander wants you. Not feeling particularly angelic? There are plenty of other festive gigs up for grabs.
Across the retail sector, the job ads are awash with enthusiasm, magic and sparkle. Apparently, Christmas casuals need more than a willingness to work weekends.
