Applications open for Illawarra Renewable Energy Zone advisory group
People from across the Illawarra are being invited to help shape plans for Australia’s first urban Renewable Energy Zone, with EnergyCo opening applications for a new community advisory group.
The group will advise on a project that aims to reshape how electricity is generated, stored and distributed across the region over the coming decades.
The Renewable Energy Zone is separate from the Commonwealth’s proposed offshore wind zone, which has sparked significant community debate but is yet to approve any projects off the Illawarra coast. Instead, the REZ is a NSW Government initiative designed to support a broader mix of energy infrastructure, including rooftop solar, home and community batteries and future renewable energy projects.
It is also expected to support new industries that rely on large amounts of clean electricity, including battery manufacturing, advanced manufacturing and low-carbon industrial production.
The advisory group will bring together representatives from business, industry, First Nations, local government, education, planning, environment, social justice and the wider community.
Its role will be to provide feedback on issues such as the design of the Renewable Energy Zone, opportunities for the region and ways to reduce impacts on local communities and the environment.
However, the group’s Terms of Reference make clear it will not make decisions on the project, instead providing advice to EnergyCo throughout its development.
The Illawarra Renewable Energy Zone stretches from Wollongong to the Shoalhaven and has an initial capacity of one gigawatt.
The group will meet at least four times a year. Community members will serve on a voluntary basis, although reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
Minister for the Illawarra Ryan Park said the region was well placed to help meet the state’s future energy needs.
“The Illawarra is in a unique position to support the state’s energy transformation and set us up for success as the region’s energy needs grow. We also have the skills and community know-how,” he said.
“The Illawarra Urban Renewable Energy Zone is a unique opportunity for our region to help lead the next chapter in clean energy, industry and jobs,” Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully said.
“This Community Reference Group will give locals a direct say in how the Illawarra REZ proceeds, so it reflects the needs of households, workers, businesses and communities.”
