Sicona lands $45 million to scale up Port Kembla battery production
The investment will create new jobs.
Port Kembla-based Sicona Battery Technologies has secured $45 million in Federal Government funding to expand production of its battery materials, marking another significant milestone for the Illawarra company.
The investment will enable Sicona to increase production of its silicon-based battery anode material by up to 300 times as it moves towards commercial-scale manufacturing. The expansion is expected to create up to 36 jobs in the Illawarra.
Sicona develops battery materials for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
The funding follows a series of major commercial announcements by the company.
In May 2025, Sicona announced a $15 million investment and technology licensing deal with Indian chemical manufacturer Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd, paving the way for its silicon-carbon anode technology to be manufactured in India for the global electric vehicle market.
Six months later, the company secured an exclusive agreement with BlueScope to investigate the construction of its flagship battery materials demonstration plant on newly rezoned land at Port Kembla.
The latest funding is expected to accelerate those plans, helping establish one of Australia’s largest advanced battery materials processing facilities in the Illawarra.
Minister for Industry and Innovation, Tim Ayres said the funding would help Sicona expand battery material production in Australia.
“This investment backs large-scale battery material production right here in Australia with real commercial demand and long-term market potential,” he said.
Member for Cunningham Alison Byrnes said the funding reinforced the Illawarra’s growing reputation as a centre for clean energy manufacturing and advanced technology.
“Sicona Battery Technologies is pioneering the next generation of battery materials right here in Wollongong – cutting battery charging times by 40 per cent, improving performance and creating a sovereign battery supply chain,” she said.
